The World Harmony Run is a global torch relay, seeking to strength international friendship and understanding. As a symbol of harmony, runners carry a flaming torch, passing it from hand to hand traveling through over 100 nations around the globe.
The World Harmony Run was founded by the late peace visionary Sri Chinmoy in 1987 and it was also in 1987 that Sri Chinmoy visited Chantry park in Ipswich. It is fitting now that in one of the towns hidden gems in a part of the park that with the nearby pond and bamboo set aside a place for reflection is now a statue of Sri Chinmoy.
Ipswich has been designated as a Sri Chinmoy peace town and there is a Sri Chinmoy Centre in Soane Street foundered by Martin Spettigue. The Mayor of Ipswich Hamil Clarke was unveiling the statue and got to hold the torch which had previous been held by such legends as Nelson Mandela,Desmond Tutu, Carl Lewis and Muhammad Ali.
People came from all over the world to watch the unveiling with 13 different country’s being represented including Ashrita Furman who holds the World Record for holding the most world records, he came all the way from Queens NY and gave the Town of Ipswich a gift of a signed copy of the Guinness book of records.
